Ljubljana weather is classified as continental, nearing on a humid subtropical type with continental characteristics. Ljubljana weather is influenced by the city’s positioning in a large basin, enclosed by sub-Alpine and Karst regions. Weather in Ljubljana varies according to different districts, from Alpine in the north, to Mediterranean in the coastal area, to continental in the northeast. Nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Ljubljana weather is primarily influenced by both the warmth of the sea and the coolness of the mountains.

Summer
Ljubljana weather during summer is characteristically warm and sunny; this is mainly due to the overwhelming influence of Mediterranean air breezes. For the months of May, June, July, August and September mercury hovers between 22 and 36 °C, August being the warmest  with highs of36 °C .Evening temperatures during summer decrease slightly to about 20 °C, making the restaurants and cafes along the river an ideal place to be at.

Even though weather in Ljubljana is exceedingly sunny, unexpected and short stormy showers are extremely familiar from the months of April right through to late November.

Winter
Ljubljana weather during winter is characteristically cold; December and January are the coldest months averaging temperatures between 2 to -5 °C, occasionally hovering at around 0 °C. During winter and autumn temperature inversions cause pollution such as smog to linger heavily over the city, bringing with it cold, wet conditions; this happens on an average of 121 days per year.

Precipitation is moderately evenly distributed throughout the seasons, while winter and spring are inclined to be somewhat drier than summer and autumn. Average annual precipitation is about 1,400 mm with June receiving the majority of rainfall. Ljubljana weather is such that the city is recognised as one of the wettest European capitals. Thunderstorms are extremely common from the months of May to September and can occasionally be quite heavy, increasing with temperature inversion.

Autumn mornings are full of abundant amounts of sunshine, but afternoons are subjected to showers and overcast cloudy skies. Because the city lies in a basin, Ljubljana weather is blessed with more than its due share of rainy days.

Towards the end of February weather in Ljubljana begins to dry and warm up, but random spring showers and thunder slowly begin to strike.
